I used to have a subscription in the 80s. I sent away for a subscription from UK (i live in USA). I almost wasn't expecting anything, but I had to try. Lo and behold, every month they faithfully sent me my issue in a brown wrapper, and it was my favorite day of the month when I saw it in the mailbox.
Curiously enough, after my subscription ran out, they continued sending me issues, for many months after.
Unfortunately, in a moment of poverty during my days at university, and being extremely short-sighted, I sold them to a record-dealer. I know, I'm an idiot!

yeah, I could kick myself for sure!
I believe Issue 3 was the first one I got. Later on, I found issue 2 somewhere else so I had that one too. Never had Issue 1 though.

Love looking through old Metal mags! Was cool to see the reference of Whiplash Fanzine and Brian Lew & Sam Kress in issue #2 . Thanks for these!

Brought back some great memories flicking through these issues - many thanks. I used to advertise regularly in the 'Penbangers' section as a tape trader - those were the days! I had every issue from sometime in 1987 onwards but unfortunately threw them all away many years ago.

It's fascinating to read about how some of these bands that are so respected now on forums like this were received at the time. What a great gig advertised in issue #20 by the way - Chariot, Angel Witch, Satan and Elixir!

I was also a "penbanger"! Been trading for so long! But it was the most fun, back then. Going to the mailbox and seeing some cassettes there, I would be in heaven! I mean, Hell! You know what I mean!

I know exactly what you mean - some days I'd get back from school and there would be 3 or 4 tapes waiting there for me - bliss! I was well into the South American death/thrash scene back then and I managed to get hold of some traders in South America, which was great because I got hold of a lot of rare stuff - but the only problem was with the delays in the mail service back then, having to wait 6 weeks or more for a reply!
