Band Questions » Anyone heard of The Clowns?
Reading an interview with Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO and he mentions opening for a band called The Clowns in the 70's. His quote... "We were opening up for a band that had just gotten a record deal called the Clowns, and they played Van Halen music before Van Halen." I immediately became interested in hearing this band. I figured if they had a record deal that maybe I could find them on Discogs but no luck. Anyone heard of this band?

The interview... www.metrotimes.com/Blogs/archives/2016/09/28/mutate-dont-stagnate-mark-mothersbaugh-in-conversation

Haha... I saw that band along with a few others through the years called the Clowns but nothing from the 70s playing Van Halen-style rock. Thanks though. (beerm)

Could it be that he meant The Snowmen?

Right time frame & the style's not far off the mark.
Originally from Pennsylvania, they relocated to California and were apparently quite a big live draw in their time.
They finally released a self-titled album on Ice Records in 1982, but by then they'd smoothed out their sound & picked up an odd New Wave/AOR edge.

I mentioned it in the Warrior Soul topic, viewtopic.php?f=124&t=29589&hilit=kiss#p201837 but recently wateched an early 1980s rock horror movie with a KISS type band in it.
Maybe they were The Clowns?
I will search and find the movie title.

From: http://www.thebetamaxrundown.com/terror-on-tour-1980/

The original music in Terror on Tour was performed by The Names, a group from Rockford, Illinois. The band members also act in the movie as the fictional rock group The Clowns. A soundtrack for Terror on Tour was never released, but lucky for you I’m a fan of obscure Midwestern late-70s power-pop and I own the only 7” The Names ever released. “Why Can’t It Be” is the best song from that 7”.

Rick Pemberton: Guitars
Rick Szeluga: Bass
Matt Wynn: Drums
