Google Asked to Remove 50 Million 4shared Links

News

This week Google received its 50 millionth takedown request for the popular file-hosting service 4shared. The staggering number clearly shows that there is plenty of infringing content being shared on the service. Still, several major music industry groups don't seem very eager to resolve their issues with 4shared directly.
As one of the largest online file-sharing services, 4shared is closely watched by copyright holders whose work is made available on the site.

The site itself has a DMCA takedown procedure in place so rightholders can remove files directly, but Google also receives its fair share of takedown notices for the site.

Over the past several years the search engine has received a mind-boggling 50 million takedown requests for 4shared URLs. Most of these, 35 million, were submitted during the past year alone.

The popular file-hosting site tops Google’s list of most reported domain names at the moment, way out in front of rapidgator.net and uploaded.net, which are in second and third place respectively.

Over 50 million takedown requests

While it may look like 4shared is the piracy kingpin of the Internet, over the years the service has taken various measures to decrease infringing activity.

For example, the site uses advanced fingerprinting technology to scan for pirated music files based on a unique audio watermark. When infringing files are found they are removed from public view.

Interestingly, leading music industry groups RIAA and IFPI haven’t shown much interest in this tool thus far.

“We tried communicating with RIAA and IFPI, especially because of their possible participation in our music identification system,” 4shared’s Mike Wilson previously told TorrentFreak.

“We did not receive any assistance, so we started with music ID by ourselves and in just one year it helped to reduce the number of copyright complaints by 16 times, while the volume of stored information is actually still growing.”

Instead of working with 4shared directly the music industry group are taking their complaints to Google, resulting in the 50 million milestone this week.

On top of that, the RIAA also reported 4shared to the U.S. Government, listing it as one of the prime pirate sites on the Internet, and scolding the fingerprinting system they apparently aren’t using themselves.

“4shared remains one of the most popular cyberlocker sites in the world. It is also the source of a staggering volume of infringing files,” RIAA wrote adding: “Clearly their audio fingerprinting is at the very least ineffective.”

Of course (or should I say, "hopefully") 4shared cannot identify the content of encrypted archives. But then, if everyone encrypts, then the content is only available where the password is shared, and that is more like the purpose of a private locker to share within a limited community.

As the number of takedown notices increase, I wonder whether they are just adding more bogus claims as part of a campaign. Remember, this is the industry who sent Mega multiple takedown notices on Kim Dotcom's own album, falsely claiming to own rights to it. That should be punishable (owning the rights to that shit, I mean (evils) )

4shared questions

Does 4shared need to be installed to have it work? Is it safe?

I've tried to d/l items (without it installed) on PC and a mac, and it always feels like a spam/virus site and I never get anywhere with it. There's blinking lights everywhere, like 5 different download buttons of various sizes on the screen, none of which seem to be for the object in question. I hit download and I get weird pop ups about Adobe & updates and my PC starts running super slow. Worried I have some viruses now.

I can't say I'd want to install it given the experience so far.

Am I missing something? I'm open to hear why it is being used. I realize beggars can't be choosers, and I'm currently in the beggar category. But as I plan for my pending uploads I can't see me using 4shared.

You should not have to install anything to use 4shared.

Maybe register for free with an email address or an account like facebook.
4shared probably still does not email you back to verify your registration; that is, if you do not plan to upload and don't care if the account could be hacked by whoever owns the fake email address you give.

Which web browser are you using ? IE Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/, Safari https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safari_%28web_browser%29, Opera http://www.opera.com/
?

If you use Firefox, there are a lot of great Add-On tools options, such as Ad-blockers, Youtube/video downloaders, etc, and an extension for MEGA which is supposed to prevent MEGA's downloads from cutting off.

Thanks for all the info. I've been using Chrome (PC and mac).

Here's what I usually see: 5-6 download buttons all over the place. Click those blue ones and it's bad news.

try just the one download button I circled in red.

After I log in to get a file, that is the icon I always click to get the 60 second countdown

AND remember to SAVE the file, not open!

Thanks for the reply, but I don't have facebook, google or do I want to sign up with 4shared. 4server used to work great, just wondering if there is another option?

I've always wondered why Google Drive or Mega.co.nz aren't what is exclusively used for hosting...4shared and the rapidshare clones, mediafire, etc. are dens of virusy misdirection and always seemed malicious to users in terms of interface.

Any reasons?

I know google tracks everything we do, so not everyone is comfortable using them for storage.
Mega.nz was taken over (by Chinese investors I think) after Kim Dotcom got into legal troubles again a few years ago, and their policy is for users to NOT publicly share files they upload.
We are taking a chance with those two hosts, the same as with any other service.

As said before by other members on the forum, it is not wise to use only one or two hosting providers, in case they disappear, or they decide to empty (dump) all the free user files one day without warning.

Yes, I figured it would be a matter of privacy at least for google. My concern is more with using a system that is guaranteed to be gone in a couple of years and is pretty user-malicious, which is what we've seen with 90% of rapidshare-alikes.

I'd posit mega is probably the best compromise right now, but it depends what you think.

You say you have used different browsers and still could not download. Looking at an old post by stratocaster_123 from 21 Jan 2016 should help.

It's a pain in the arse, but i put up with it if it's something i really want.
Far from ideal though.

There's a way to bypass it. ;)
1. Open any link on 4shared.
2. Click on 'Add to my account' button.
3. Go to your account.
4. Then find this file and click on it.
5. Next, click 'Free download'.

As you can see, there is 0 seconds instead of 20 or 1000. (wink)

I only do that if someone has uploaded files but not zipped them, but it also works in this case too, because I just did that with a Roadstar single.

If you do not log in to 4shared ,
(it is free after all, and we have started using it since the Lockjaw blogspot days, around 2009?),
then no idea why it does not work.

Just a note -

if you use a VPN, like Hide My IP,
4shared now seems to block it, so you will have to disable it, to see the download link on the 4shared page you open.
