Breaking the mold of my usual uploading of Japanese stuff here, thought this was way too cool to not post here for you guys, it's a bootleg of Van Halen's 1976 demo which was funded by Gene Simmons of Kiss. Simmons brought the demo to Kiss' management who promptly said Van Halen would never make it big and tossed the demo aside (Simmons apparently even wanted the band to change their name to Daddy Longlegs (???)). Obviously the rest is history from there though as the band exploded into fame shortly after. This is still super cool, the audio sounds great and the music here is incredibly heavy rock for its time, few bands were heavier without being full-blown heavy metal. Several tracks made their way onto albums eventually too. Enjoy!

    Recording info:
Recorded in May 1976 at Village Recorder Studios in Los Angeles, mixed at Electric Ladyland Studios in New York.
    Produced by Gene Simmons (Kiss).
These demo tracks are also known as "Gene Simmons demo(s)" or "Village Recorder demo".

Completely agree with Tachi - pretty heavy (both of them) if you consider the recording year.

Anyone happened to have some cover scans (e.g. from master tape)?

Got another 10 track album, said to be "The Unreleased" (1974) - anyone´s got some information about it?

This is the famous demo that Gene Simmons financed and produced.

Some tracks were recorded in Village Recorder in L.A., while the guitar solos and overdubs were laid down at Electric Ladyland in New York City. Probably more tracks were demoed at the time, 12 - 15 tracks according to Gene Simmons.

During their 1976 club days VAN HALEN performed the KISS songs "Firehouse" and "Rock 'n' Roll All Nite" live, among covers of bands like ZZ Top, Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin.

Strappado, I have a question for you: yesterday I've seen this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIziGSWAcgw
and I've been surprised, since I didn't know they played such covers in the early times; my question is: it's this live recording real? Or it's a fake (like many other videos always circulated on YT in all these years) ?
    (???)

I love this one! A real rough´n´dirty rocking tight band with no frills at all - especially if you consider the year of its release! But - as far as it´s concerning myself - that doesn´t mean too much: I also love the "Diver Down"-Album as well...
