General Metal Discussions » Bootlegging/Pirating Record Companies Whos Releases You Should Avoid
Atlantis Metal wrote:Anyone got any thoughts on Krescendo Records? Have heard there's been some issues about their legitimacy. I've bought a few of their CD releases recently and have been disappointed with the sound quality, such as Sword's 'Metalized' and 'Law of Devil's Land' by Loudness. Their A II Z Witch of Berkeley 2 disc release was the worst of the lot though. I'm pretty sure the 1st disc is actually the same release as the Reborn Classics bootleg from the early 90's (same bonus tracks and running order), but the version I got was full of 'clicks' as if the source tape was damaged, although I don't know if it was just the copy I got or if all copies were like that.

Krescendo Records is actually Majestic Rock Records under a different name everything they release is a bootleg copied from whatever CD they could find this is obvious because most these re-releases sound like crap and these artists were never involved in the entire thing.

Another one to add is Wounded Bird Records these releases are not supported by any of these artists on listed on their website and is just a way for Warner Music Group to recoup all the money they lost on these releases when they originality came out.

Some of the either bad re-releases or bootlegs I have that I'm not certain of (feel free to ask a picture of any specified cd if you're interested):

I've got a weird cd which I'm 100% it's a bootleg. It's Death Metal Sampler with Running Wild, Hellhammer, Helloween and Dark Avenger. Quite nicely pressed with picture CD but the inner side of booklet's print looks bit weary (text is sort of washed off). Also no record company info and booklet is just a paper without any inner pages. the cd has no text but on it's backside near the "inner center" next to the "hole" it reads : #9323 - BLACKNESS -14782194.

Wonder where that serial comes from?
Can take pictures tomorrow maybe.

Edit - ok here's the pics:

-------------------------------------------------------------

Laserlight Digital: have Gravestone's compilation cd
Wounded Bird Records: have Malice's In The Beginning cd

Wonder about Black Mark Production (Edit: Seems legit). I have OZ's Fire In The Brain from them and booklet is really cheap. Just a two-sided paper with backside being plain white. No notes, no lyrics. If it's legit it's cheaply made re-release at least. Cd itself says (C) + (P) 1996 Black Mark Production, BMCD 112, LG 6201, GEMA

Here's some more Locomotive Records everything of theirs is a bootleg they have horrible CD layouts and 1 page inserts

Rusty Cage Records the releases from this label have never been approved of by any artist.

Edit: Banzai Records (despite having the Polygram Records logo on it)
Barricade Records
No Poser Records
Noble Rot Records
Rock Candy Records (not the label that does those AOR music reissues)

Yeah thought so, though their OZ's Fire In The Brain release really has sub-par booklet and all.. design is so cheap I always wondered it it was a bootleg.

Are you sure about Locomotive Records? There seems to be horribly much information (like this) about them online and I cannot find sources claiming bootleg-gery. Their info and website is also in metal-archives.com.

Can anyone else also confirm this or have more information about them? Is there two companies with that name? Are there bootlegs floating around by their name?

Also Majestic Rock is claimed to be legit in Hellride Forums at this topic. So It's to be put on hold unless someone can prove them being bootleggers or provide bit more information. Have to be careful to put up valid info that's all :)

Locomotive's website has been like that for four years and yes I have a few CD's by them that were officially released by other companies and these companies are not credited on the releases and neither are the band members.

Allrighty.. so many additions that I'm trying to do some cross-checking the other day and add at least clear cases while we can continue discussion with the other ones mentioned.

At least Rock Candy is also mentioned being legit elsewhere. I have Armored Saint's March of The Saint CD by them which says "issued under license of Sony BMG Music Entertainment". It has booklet with band bio written by Malcolm Dome in 2006 and booklet has referrations to Chrysalis Records (1984) who was the original record company releasing the album etc. It reads: "Archive photos supplied by John Bush and Joey Vera. Remastered in 2006 by Jon Astley for Close To The Edge Mastering, Sound shaped from 24 bit digital tools via POW-r. Rock Candy salutes: Joey Vera, John Bush & Malcolm Dome". It seems legit to me at least but I'm not an expert.

Oh yea. That's the legit one. The word "AOR" fooled me since I know them mostly from Armored Saint. ;) But that's confusing if there's also bootleging company with that name.. (mad2)

The Rock Candy Records I'm talking about seems to have released stuff from the mid to late 90s then disappeared I've seen a few releases by them and passed on buying em. Also the store where I found these bootlegs also no longer exist they closed 2 years ago.

Strappado wrote:+ some I am aware of

ROXCALIBUR DISTRIBUTION (Released split boots of all Heavy Load releases)
PHOENIX RECORDS (Bootleg Vinyl reissues of NWOBHM singles etc, numbered limited pressings on coloured vinyl)
NEW WAVE OF SWEDISH HEAVY METAL (Bootleg Vinyl reissues of Swedish 7" (clear / coloured) - Gotham City, Heavy Load, Torsten, Shakespeare etc)

The problem with Phoenix is that they also (used to) make legitimate records. For instance the original releases from Holocaust were also on a Phoenix label. (i.e. Album Nightcomers / 12" Smokin' valves)

Hey by the way whichreleases of them do you own that are bootlegs? Thanks for checking if you can. Will be helpful :)

Also does anyone have more information whether Rusty Cage Records are bootleg company? Or are they releasing both legit and bootlegs? Any extra info provided would be helpful.

Wait a minute so are these Flames releases their "legit" or "bootleg" releases?

For everyone: Also from now on, feel free to discuss about anything bootleg re-release related. But IF YOU WANT SPECIFIC RECORD LABEL TO BE INCLUDED IN THE LIST, provide more info than just a label name. Name some album(s) that they have released which are bootleg(s), or name source (URL) where it is claimed that certain label is about bootlegs. Or provide other sort of statement. Also if it's a company that releases quite equally both legit and bootlegs, please mention this also.

I think this is necessary to provide certain reliability and good way to give some direction to those who wonder "why" is this company in the list - that's all, thanks.

Not the same label, Phoenix that released the Holocaust records was a UK label (basically it was more like their own label, named from by record store their vocalist at the time was working as indicated at Malc Macmillians NWOBHM encyclopedia). Phoenix that released Geddes Axe, Virtue, Overdrive and so many other NWOBHM singles in 250 coloured copies is a bootleg label from Brazil.

demonhellrogues are correct. There is many labels with this name which may make it a bit confusing.
Here is the logo / print used on the back-sleeve of their releases.

http://i.imgur.com/IKyzI.jpg

The vinyl label usually look like this, and the other side have the band name and title written with cursive text in the same font as "Phoenix".

Here's Rusty Cage Records legit releases http://www.metal-archives.com/labels/Ru ... cords/1788

The bootlegs I have on Locomotive are Jon Olivia's Pain "Global Warming" and Babylon Bomb "Doin' You Nasty" strangely with info black out on the back covers of both.
