  • So I was having a discussion with my blog associate about common themes in metal through the years. One of my favorites is what we called "loner metal", songs that deal with the theme of rejecting or being rejected by society. Some of these songs were anthems for me growing up, as I was the only metal kid in a tiny midwestern (US) town where only the most mainstream of ideas were allowed to exist. As I grow older I really value the message in these songs, because they were my companions in times of darkness. Here's the list we put togther:

    Black Sabbath-Iron Man
    Metallica-Escape
    At the Gates-Nausea
    Crowbar-Still I Reach
    Blind Guardian-I'm Alive
    Anthrax-Lone Justice
    Iron Maiden-Remember Tomorrow

I know there's tons more and I was thinking of making a playlist of all loner metal. Suggestions?

Here is a link to the post as it appeared on our blog

Metallica's "Fade to Black" and Judas Priest's "Beyond the Realms of Death" are to me, very "loner" songs, about someone so alone and so hopeless. Also you can add Metallica's "One" to that one too, or Destruction's "Life Without Sense" also comes to mind. Hell, right now I'm listening to Blood of the Nations and it just happens to be on the track "Kill the Pain", which could fit this topic as well.

Yeah! "Beyond the Realms of Death" has got to be one of my faves, Can't believe I forgot that in the original post, crap, now that I think about it, JP's early albums are filled with loner songs!

In addition I'd think Blitzkrieg's Pull the trigger would qualify.

When I was young, I was so wild,
'Cause I wasn't like any child
No I wasn't like every child
    My eyes are blind

I've never seen the rays of light
The sea, the sky, the snow so white
I'd like to know the color white
    But i belong...

To the night, to the dark
Far is the light, deep in the dark
    I'm walking through the dark
I've never seen, deep in the dark
    Without sight in the dark
My life's a fight deep in the dark

I dream to see the gleams of sun
I'd like to live, I'd like to run
All I want is having some fun,
    Don't need no gun

To the black night I belong,
For me the nighttime seems so long
But the will to live makes me strong
    I belong...

Well thanks a lot that's nice to hear. Although I'vent been writing so much lately I'll keep up doing it when I can. Graduating from studies has been taking all the time last two months. Some of the first writing's plus blogs original idea wasn't so good but focusing more on real reviews has been more fun. Trying slowly improve my writing style as I go.. just for fun. Heavy metal is good topic to blog about since I don't feel any forced to write about it. (bow)

Meanwhile I'll update to this post if I come up with more "loner" songs.

I can't believe I forgot my anthem, "The Rager" By Agent Steel (\m/), that would be a good candidate even though the lyric is weird as hell. Also "Roads to Madness" by Queensryche is pretty loner.

Though the original is not metal at all, lyrically among the desperate and hopeforlorn songs is "Sounds of silence". I don't seem to be alone with that opinion, 'cause there quiet a few coverversions. My favourite one is from Nevermore, they made the music breathing the lyrical message.

Great song - I even love the Simon & Garfunkel original. The Nevermore cover is cool, but my favorite is the Heir Apparent one on "One Small Voice". Beautiful, haunting rendition of this classic!
