Mine goes to NWOBHM.
For now i heard only a few of them but for me they have something(their sound or maybe the attitude that their music sends to my ears),that makes me vote'em.

due to August vacations/holidays I missed the poll, but I would have given power-metal another vote. Doesn't get any better than early Helloween, Gamma Ray, early Blind Guardian, Running Wild, Scanner, and bands like that. But my all-time favorite is Iron Maiden and also Criss-era Savatage and this heavy melodic crunchy style - early Metal Church ... all great stuff. But generally I like it fast. I like it complex too, I want something that takes good guitarists to play. Lots of flashy guitarwork. A lot of power-metal sucks, it's simple riffing and boring guitar. But the great bands are truly great.

I don't really have a favourite genre of metal because the characteristics I like to hear (usually a good balance between melody and aggression) expand to more than one genre of metal; but out of the genres listed on the poll, I'd have to say NWOBHM...even though as FytTigersharq argued; isn't really a genre as it was more just a movement. :L

Strappado, could you please separate Black and Death metal? Black/Death is pretty much like NWOBHM/Heavy Metal or Speed/Thrash Metal, only worse.

Only 5 % voted for Hard Rock...? For me Hard Rock is for example Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, B.Ö.C., Aerosmith and so on. Should be at least 50 % for hard Rock... ;-)

Power Metal if you mean the US bands like Omen Manowar NOT the Power-Prog keyboard stuff
Doom Metal like Candlemass or St.Vitus but not a great fan
Speed Metal is where i stop
Thrash Metal is Punk Metal for me
Black / Death Metal(in its pure form not the melodic sub-genres) unacceptable cause of the vocals

I've chosen Hard Rock (the roots and it covers a wide range of bands) and of course Heavy Metal!
NWOBHM to me refers to an era ('79-'82) rather than a particular genre, so I guess HM label covers most NWOBHM bands...
I'm also a big fan of power/prog bands like Crimson Glory, Helstar etc.!

My first all-time favorites were from hard rock. But their list sadly is very short.
So my definetely favorite style in metal is speed-power of european ( mostly german )
school . So i choose power and speed . Because metal must be fuckin fast and powerful,
isn't it ?
