  • There was Iron Butterfly once upon a time, and in the 80s Iron Angel and Iron Maiden. More recently Iron Reagan are popular but with the exception of Agent Steel, what other bands have an actual metal element in their name. Metallica does not apply for obvious reasons.

Ha! Cool topic. I started thinking about some lesser known metals and finally thought about my compatriot from many years ago - Maria Skłodowska-Curie. In the end, she was awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery of two metals: polonium and radium, so it fits great ;)
Well, it turns out that there is a thrash band from New Zealand called Rad-X. I have not found Polonium :(

    Iron Claw
Led Zeppelin (although they changed the spelling)
    Magnesium
Osmium (actually there are multiple bands with this name)
    Silverwing
    Snakes of Iron
    Zirconium

Naquadah is named after a fictional metal from Stargate.

One of my friends had a punk band called Strontium 90 a long time ago, which is funny as it was also the name of Sting's band before The Police. There were also NZ punk/rock bands with names like Falling Steel, Cobalt Trio and Mercury Crowe. And an NZ noise project I stumbled onto on mp3.com called Tinpot Terror, which might appeal to noisegrind fans.

I remember four good bands right now: Alvacast (Uru) and Steel Attack (Swe),Anvil (Can), Steel Blazon (Bra)

Naming one band after metals i think it's an statement of loyalty to the metal music, i like it if it's not much repetitive.

What about bands named after weapons made of metals? Like all the bands with axe, hammer, blade, sword, etc.

Probably many of them. Even bands named after metals is a lot more than I thought but yes weapons factored in there would be lots for sure. Wasn't there a band named Plutonium Truncheon once?

If there wasn't then they need to exist. That's a name and a half! (hehe)

Interesting thread, never thought about that. (hmm)
Depending on how exactly* you define metals, it must be several hundred bands (if not more than thousand).
    * As steel is an alloy of iron it actually shouldn´t be considered to be a metal, same goes out for the word metal itself.

Anyhow, I asked my database for Austrian bands and almost got 20 bands out:
Austrian bands having metals in their name

    Adrenochrom (Cross/AM)
    Colours of Monochrome (St-Ps)
    Golden Dawn (BM/GM)
    Golden X (HC)
    Heavy Metal Polizei (HM)
    Iridium (TM)
    Iron Balls (HR/Metal)
    Iron Heel (St-Ps/Doom)
    Liquid Steel (HM)
    Metal Daze (HM)
    Metal Freak Project (Rock)
    Metal of Honor (HM/TM)
Nothing Gold can stay & Within Walls (HC)
    Nothing Gold can stay (HC/Metal)
Ronnie Rocket & The burning Chrome (Rock)
    Sergeant Steel (HR/RR/HM)
    Silver Inc. (AM/Gru)
    Titan Killer (HM)
    Titana (TM/PM)

Pretty sure that metal and steel are the most used metals in bandnames, let´s cut them out. What comes next?
Likely iron, silver and gold, then titan - I suppose.

    Anyone thought about lead/leaden?
I´m aware of the multiple meanings of lead, but who knows what a band intends by choosing its name.
M-A lists 35 bands having lead in their bandname…

Ok, let´s make a competition out of it.
A real metal (any language) counts 2 points, the words "metal" and "steel" score 1 point.

Which bands are metal as fuck, just by their names? ;)
    Any suggestions?
