General Metal Discussions » Suggestions on bands similar to Queensryche and Fates Warning
Hey all,

I'm new to the board as well and am looking for bands similar to early Queensryche and early Fates Warning (up to and including No Exit). I already know about Lethal, Crimson Glory, and Mystic Force. Prefer bands with a solid singer who can occasionally hit a nice scream. Thanks in advance.

Texas' Syrus was very good, but they only have demo releases. Powersurge out of Florida have a nice power metal sound with the type of singing that you crave. They are a little more power with hints of the progressive. Also, there's King's Ransom and Force Majeure.

Check out Enchanter's compilation, Steel Prophet's "Inner Ascendance" demo, Dead Calm's full-length, False Witness's compilation...there's quite a few out there, really.

Another American band, Archetype, sound like early Fates Warning albeit modernized and much more advanced in terms of technical ability and songwriting/composing.

Prodigy/Oracle are also probably going to be your thing although they sound more like a much riffier and more technical version of Crimson Glory.

I recommend these two excellent Italian albums:

Moon of Steel - Passions (in the Crimson Glory/Queensryche style)
Adramelch - Irae Melanox (in the Fates Warning style, mixed with Warlord and some Maiden and Helloween)

The first few bands/albums that come to mind are:

IMPERIUM 'Too Short a Season'
DRIVE 'Characters In Time'
HITTMAN s/t & 'Vivas Machina'
LIEGE LORD 'Burn To My Touch'
ATTACKER 'Battle at Helms Deep'
HOLLOW (both albums)

but the list goes on, for sure. HADES 'If At First You Don't Succeed...', WATCHTOWER 'Control & Resistance', APOCRYPHA 'Forgotten Scroll' & 'The Eyes of Time', even DEPRESSIVE AGE 'First Depression' & 'Lying in Wait'.... all worthy prog/melodic/power metal efforts with distinct styles but still of the same family as Fates or Qryche...

Speaking of Sacred Blade, if you enjoy that band, you should probably check out Othyrworld as well who are basically a reformed and refined Sacred Blade.

I second that. I have both of the band's official CD's : Of The Sun + Moon and Beyond Into The Night of Day (under Othyrworld name). Both smokes, even the new ones. Hopefully they would release a new album in future :o

The singing and some songs sound like Queensyryche to me on Michael Phillips - Mirrors Within Mirrors CD.
Along with the slightly proggy stuff, there is also straight heavy metal,
and some thrash metal with Scott waters (Ultimatum) lead vocals one song.
Lots of guest musicians.
I can't find any listening links for you.
Michael Phillips has played on Deliverance albums if that helps,
and there is seller I transacted with successfully twice on Ebay,who is selling the CD for only $1.99 compared to the new price of whatever from ROXX Records or http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/mphillipsmusic

Good suggestions, so far. The only one I'd like to add is Alpha Tiger especially because the vocalist sounds almost exactly like John Arch

Enforce is a dead ringer for Queensryche circa 'Empire'. Divebomb Records has it reissued right now with bonus tracks and an audio interview.

I think Zaxas, Lethal, Conception, Divine Regale and Lord Bane are similar.

Hi!
I absolutely love this post... USPM Bands (from 80's & 90's) with Progressive tendencies is my worship topic...
I have seen many extraordinary bands already listed here and others that I didn't know (so I'm very happy I can know something new)....
Below you can find a summary of the bands mentioned in this discussion just to have a clear overview... bands are arranged alphabetically so no preferences were introduced but each band has some indicators about my personal opinion...

++ : definetely a band close to your mentioned preference (early Queensryche/Fates Warning)
+- : in the same way but a little bit different such that it is more USPM or NWOBHM or Prog or etc..
-- : not very close but if you can enjoy for sure
* : I don't know this band.... must get it!! :)
# : I know this band exists.... but never heard because can't find a copy...

Adramelch ++
Alpha Tiger +-
Angellic Rage ++
Apocalypse +-
Archetype +-
Attacker +-
Black Eden *
Conception +-
Conditioned Response ++
Crimson Glory ++
Damien Black ++
Damien Steele +-
Dead Calm ++
Divine Regale --
Drive ++
Enchanter ++
Enforce #
Exxplorer #
False Witness ++
False Witness ++
Fifth Angel --
First Strike ++
Force Majeure *
Haven*
Heir Apparent ++
Hittman --
Hollow +-
Imperium +-
King's Ransom *
Kingsbane +-
Lethal ++
Liege Lord +-
Lord Bane ++
Moon of Steel +-
Mystic Force +-
Obsession +-
Oliver Magnum ++
Paladin +-
Powersurge *
Prodigy/Oracle +-
Rebellion ++
Recon ++
Sacred Blade --
Sacred Warrior ++
Saharra --
Scarlet Rayne ++
Screamer ++
Solar Eagle +-
Steel Prophet ++
Syrus ++
Titan Force +-
Zaxas +-
Zions Abyss ++

Now... some other recommendations you should listen because these bands are essential to the genre (and because you will 100% like)...

A Shattered Dream
Auditory Imagery
Cauldron Born
Digital Ruin
Dreamlore
Emissary
House Of Spirits
Jester's March
Letter X
Leviathan
Mercury Rising
Mirror
Myth
Near Infinity
Omega Point
Power of Omens
Psychotic Waltz

then you have many bands that come quite close to your preference but they are more proggy or more inclined to other styles like trash, power, etc..
in any case very good bands you surely will like

Abstrakt Algebra
Aftermath
Agent Steel
Alchemy X
Alias
All Too Human
Angel X
Atheist
Ax'n Sex
Black Reign
Blackkout
Blind Illusion
Brothers Grimm
Carisma
Catharsis
Control Denied

Cyperus
Cyrcle IX
Damn The Machine
Deathrow
Defyance
Dreamstate
Elegy
Emerald
Equinox
Exises
Exivious
Fatal Opera
Getaway

There is a track in PENTAGRAM's (Turkey) Anatolia, of 1997, called "Behind The Veil" which is absolutely QUEENSRYCHE for sure.

Another band that has elements from "QUEENSRYCHE" and "FATES WARNING",
is "THROES OF SANITY" and their "The Upheaval" full length, of 1995.

I like Queensryche, but if I want to hear similar bands, then only want ones copying the Queensrÿche [EP] / The Warning [LP]-style.
It sounded to me like their spin off of Iron Maiden/Judas Priest traditional metal.

I will check what what pilufo recommended with the ++ notations.
