General Metal Discussions » Copy & Paste Similar Riffs
Don't know if there's already a topic for this;
I've made it to file riffs or musical compositions that look pretty much the same;
As I'm too lazy for checking the topics I started, don't expect me to be checking it many times;
And please, don't post covers as thay are evidently similar to another song.

1rst, loving the two ones, I think the main riff is similar but with a different tempo:
Tygers of Pan Tang - Suzie Smiled

Judas Priest - Grinder

---
2nd, I think this, let's say structure, it's a bit overexploited. That, or I'm a bit paranoid (lately, I've been seen it in many songs I don't remember now):

Megadeth - Hangar 18

Riot - Bloodstreets

Armoured Heart - Far Beyond The Sun

*The same case of tempo as before, between the first solo of "Hangar 18" song and the main structure of "far beyond the sun"

The Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps

-I've chosen, I know, pretty popular ones to start with, but they're the ones I remember, for now.
---
Edit 1 (17-9-14): Added Riot's Bloodstreets and The Beatles' While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Left the rest of the post untouched.

Queen - Liar

Metallica - For Whom The Bell Tolls

The solo at the end of Liar (5:10), it's quite similar with the one from the beginning of For Whom The Bell Tolls.

Listen to the first minute or so of each song:

Guns N' Roses: Sweet Child Of Mine (1987):

Canis Major: Butterfly Queen (1980):

They were released 7 years apart - but to me it sounds like G'n'R did quite a bit of "borrowing" here... ;)
(the bass-line in particular is played almost note-for-note during the intro/verse)

The vocalist of Canis Major went on to join Girlschool a few years later, btw.

Here are some very similar:

the ending of "For whom the bell tolls" by 'tallica and the ending of "Home of once brave" by the all mighty Bathory

Now "Running wild" by the Priest and "Wicker man" by maiden

And again master Quorthon with "Necromancy" and Burzum's "War"

Actually the rip-off version of heaven and hell is not that bad. But if we're going to talk about shameless music theft i think i might have a winner right here:

I think i don't need to post what song is ripping-off but i'll still do it so you don't have to go to your folder or you tube to wash the garbage out of your ears:

About that evil riff

Gustav Holst - Mars, The Bringer of War

Maurice Ravel - Boléro

Link Wray - Rumble

Jeff Beck - Beck's Bolero

Andromeda - Return to Sanity

Writing on the Wall - Shadow of Man

Diamond Head - Am I Evil?

Looks like many films took something from the first one, too.
Now, the only thing left is to know if Gustav Holst got the influence of another musician or if it's totally his.
Most likely the second but I don't know
_______________________________________________________________________________________________

Another Similarity

Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing

Rainbow - Catch The Rainbow

---
Edit 1 (17-9-14): Added Andromeda's Retun to Sanity (mentioned by TommyBolin), Maurice Ravel's Boléro and Jeff Beck's Beck's Bolero (mentioned by metalfink) and Link Wray & His Ray Men's Rumble, all previously posted in the Proto Metal & Early 60s/70s Metal topic.

I think in Kylie Minogue's case it's simply a matter of coincidence than rip-off, it's not like The Hellion is some unconventional melody you couldn't possibly come up by accident. And the Cindy Und Bert song is a cover version with changed lyrics.

What about this:

Personally I like both, but Truffle is faster and more metal and is therefore a unanimous winner...

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)

Let's set a bit of fire (evil).
Iron Maiden - 2 Minutes to Midnight

White Spirit - Midnight Chaser

Rory Gallagher - Moonchild

Does someone know about an earlier riff similar to these? (knight1)

By the way, thanks for letting me know about Glory Bells, Strappado.
I really like to find classic riffs made prior to the ones made by the bands who popularized 'em.
---
Marylin Manson - The Beautiful People

ZZ Top - La Grange

Bang - Questions

John Lee Hooker - Boogie Chillen'

---
Flotsam and Jetsam - No Place For Disgrace (from 3:07 to 4:39)

Dust - From A Dry Camel

---
Edit 1 (17-9-14): Added Boogie Chillen' and some of its possible "descendants".
Edit 2 (21-9-14): Added Flotsam and Jetsam's No Place For Disgrace and Dust's From A Dry Camel.
