General Metal Discussions » What concerts do you prefer...
Hello everyone!
Just want to ask what kind of lives do you prefer and what do you hate?

I love going to small pubs seeing local bands. We mostly have 4 or 5 bands playing for low money, and sometimes they're even better than "big fishes".
You can also have a beer with everyone, most of the band members are into the crowd, everyone are just friends.

Now the other side if the coin...

I hate big festivals like Wacken or something. Huge wall of people, lot's of crappy bands and very expensive. I also have to admit the sound - just horrible! I still don't know why people go to big festivals... Is it because of the headliners ?

What do you think about it and what kind do you prefer, I really want to know.

Cheers! (vking1)

i have turned my back on big festivals for almost a decade now , doesn't seem to worth the money nor the time..
thankfully , there are plenty of shows with local bands or underground festivals going on such as

or

which , along with a few other shows , such as

satisfy my needs for live shows..
Clearly , it's the kind of shows where you can share a beer with the band at the end etc

I (used to) prefer small gigs / tiny venues. They do not cost much money and you can get close enough to see the band.

Very large to Stadium type concerts, can have just as crappy sound half the time too... but costs 10x more.

Now, I only prefer concerts on dvd...or downloaded video :D

Heavy metal is their life"

I went to a bar / club last night in Hamilton, to see Manacle , a Toronto heavy metal band play live.

They were one of the bands opening for another Toronto band , Python, who sound to me in the Cauldron , Skullfist, Axxion type vein I guess, but with a rough / gruff sounding singer (eg.. John Bush , Armored Saint / Anthrax).

Was not interested in the other bands after I listened to some of their music online, and was not really planning to attend, but went anyway.
First show I went to in 2 years or something, as I rather spend my money now on buying records, zines, dvd's, etc, and it is cheaper to drink at home.

Walked in during the last few songs by Lutharö.
Female blonde singer was short and attractive, with a clean, clear style, (maybe will be loved by the power metal crowd?), and the band played well, but it was not that interesting to me...
....until the last 1/2 of their final song , when all of a sudden the riffing and guitar solos jumped out at me , just totally blowing me away!, so maybe I will give Lutharö another chance.

It seemed to take forever for the bands to swap gear off and onstage, as I waited, and had no cash for beer, and the ATM inside refused to give me money.
Was for the best, as I was probably drunk already, from earlier, by having 3 of these 1.183 Liter bottles ---

Manacle are really good, oldschool, pure headbanging metal. Don't know who to compare them to, but if you like NWOBHM, you probably would like them.
The guitar player is Inti, who is also in other bands, and runs the Hard and Heavy Records label / distro.

You know, I really feel uncomfortable being stuck in the middle of a crowd. I'm probably one of the few people that likes buying seat tickets for amphitheater/arena type shows. People usually stick to their seats and I a don't have to worry about people moving in and out of the crowd like they do at general admission shows. (I think I have bad luck because it seems the tallest guy at the show always stands right in front of me. I hate that, especially if I pick my spot early. Ha!) I like small shows but will usually hang out toward the back. I went to Maryland Deathfest this year. It was my first large metal fest. I loved it! I'm going again next year. Plenty of space to hang out and watch the bands away from the crowd...
