phantaz wrote:and which are those roots? i am more into more extreme metal (black, death, thrash) then heavy (as a sub-genre, not as whole). not that i am completely unaware of heavy-metal pillars, but i did part from it many years ago

Manowar (1st,2nd,3rd,4th,6th), Candlemass (1st,2nd), Bathory (5th,6th,B.O.I), Warlord, Manilla Road (3rd,4th,5th), Omen (1st,2nd,3rd), Cirith Ungol, Heavy Load (EP, 2nd, 3rd),... These are some of the bands/albums that influenced the bands you mentioned but there is plenty more wealth in the epic metal sub-genre. Check these first and I'll be around if you need something else.

cheers again, mate.
some of those are amongst my favorites (bathory, cirith ungol, for example) i will check some of them some time soon, i hope :D
cheers mate

Looking for some old school epicness. I already know of the more prolific bands (Cirith Ungol, Brocas Helm, Battleroar, Atlantean Kodex, Manowar). Preferably barbaric with some solid vocals, but I'm open to suggestions. Anyone know of bands that I shouldn't miss?

Wow, both these bands rock.
Ageless Wisdom sounds like they had some real potential, it's too bad they got cut short. Longings Past is right down my alley.
Thanks, both of you!

Ever tried DOOMSWORD? They're very epic with very good vocals.
If you like them, GJALLAHORN is another obvious choice, as they feature 2 DOOMSWORD members.
The MCD of JOTENHEIM features Queen of the Black Coast Coverversion, indicatiting their MANILLA ROAD Influence.
HOLY MARTYR is another name, that came into my mind instantly.
Hope you'll find something that fits!

Ageless Wisdom was great recommendation! Really close to the sound of Manilla! (especially "Kingdom without name") This demo was suppossed to be released as single in late 90's/early 00's. To be honest I don't remember if it did and if so why, I didn't get it!! (hmm)

Another Manilla Road influenced songs/bands:

I bought their release some month ago from Shadow Kingdom shop ( It was so perfectly short-rewiewed , ).
Music is good epic with some doomy pieces , but IMO - much softer than CU and MR - not evil at all . But in any case- one of the best discoveries of the year for me. (clap4)
I also recieved re-issue of swedish epic - doom Sorcerer at same package - one more can be suggested for fans of Candlemass
style ( probably best album in style except Candlemass itself ). (metal1)

I thought so, but I was doing my military service during these times so I wasn't sure what happened eventually. I think, I had even seen an ad or an article heralding its release.

Tales Of Medusa from Canada play epic heavy metal that easily rivals Isen Torr in greatness, some would even say its better.
Another Canadian band that fits this thread would be the up and coming GATEKEEPER. Perfect epic metal heavily in the vein of Atlantean Kodex.
